The story of "The Drowning Girls" is based on a real murder case in early 20th century England: George Joseph Smith seduced a series of women, using a different identity each time. He isolated the women from their families, had all of their property signed over to him, purchased life insurance and then drowned each one in a bathtub. Three of the doomed brides – Bessie, Alice and Margaret – tell their stories from beyond the grave, taking turns playing their own murderer, as well as other people in their lives. A 2009 production at the Tarragon Theatre was described as "wonderfully melodramatic, blackly humorous and socially relevant, all at the same time."
